Head Teachers Powers Strengthen

Greater powers to search children are being given to head teachers in England along with clearer guidance on restraining disruptive children.

Teachers are already allowed to search for weapons and after September high schools will also be allowed to search for drugs, alcohol and stolen goods. Teachers will also be allowed to confiscate mobile phones, legal highs, pornography and cigarettes in the future.

This is all part of a recent drive by ministers to try to improve pupils behaviour and discipline. Plans include the simplification of guidance on the use of force and teacher anonymity when accusations of malpractice are made.

The Conservatives promised they would make it easier for head teachers to maintain discipline and good behaviour within schools. Recent Ofsted reports suggest that behaviour is no better than satisfactory in one in six schools.

Schools minister Nick Gibb said, "I think parents want to know that the classroom to which they are sending their child every day is a safe place where their child can learn."
